Why Sharing Your Story is a Superpower

Written by: Rizzy Akanji

Sharing your personal experiences with the world is one of the most powerful things you can do. When we open up about our challenges, we invite others to connect with us on a deeper level. This vulnerability not only helps us heal but also empowers others who might be going through similar struggles. By sharing our stories, we can create a ripple effect of empathy and support that reaches far beyond our immediate circle.

Finding Strength in Vulnerability

Living with sickle cell has been incredibly challenging for me. The constant pain, fatigue, and hospital visits were overwhelming. However, these struggles led me to discover a passion for digital art. Through art and poetry, I expressed my emotions and coped with the pain. Sharing my artwork online connected me with a supportive online community who appreciated and related to my journey.

Another deeply vulnerable experience was sharing the trauma of sickle cell crises and frequent blood transfusions. These crises are not just physically painful but emotionally draining. Opening up about them was daunting, but it brought an unexpected wave of support. People who had faced similar medical challenges reached out, and their resilience inspired me. This mutual sharing fostered a profound sense of solidarity and understanding.

The Ripple Effect of Telling Your Story

Since sharing my story, I’ve received hundreds of messages from people with sickle cell across the globe, as well as their family members asking for advice. My content has garnered millions of views on TikTok. I’ve been invited to Warner Brothers’ London headquarters to discuss sickle cell and contacted by NHS staff, pharmaceutical workers eager to understand more about the lived experience with sickle cell. People constantly pray for me in messages, which is incredibly uplifting.

When you share your personal experiences, especially about overcoming challenges, it’s like discovering a superpower. By putting your story out into the world, you create magical connections that transcend explanation. This magic lies in the shared human experience, in the empathy and support that come flooding in from people who relate to your journey.

How We Can Support Each Other

So, how can you help those sharing their stories? First, listen. Listening with an open heart and without judgment is powerful. It’s in these moments that people feel heard and valued, which can be incredibly healing.

Another way to help is by sharing your own experiences. When you share your story, you validate the experiences of others and create a space for mutual support. This cycle of empathy and understanding builds strong, compassionate communities.

Offering practical support is also crucial. Sometimes, those sharing their struggles need more than a sympathetic ear. They might need resources, advice, or just someone to check in on them. Don’t hesitate to ask, “How can I help you?” This shows you are ready to provide the specific help they need.

For those on the verge of sharing their stories, remember that your helpers are on the other side of that plane of raw expression. Once you muster the courage to open up, you’ll find countless people ready to support you. Sharing your story is not just about seeking help but teaching others how to help you. By being clear about your needs, you empower those around you to provide meaningful support.

Embracing, and Owning Your Superpower

I’ve been managing sickle cell since 12 months young. It took me 30 years to realise that sharing your personal experiences with the world is a powerful act of vulnerability, that can lead to profound connections and support. Humanity is compassionate and eager to help, but they need to be shown how. By expressing our needs and sharing our stories, we create a community of understanding and mutual aid. Let’s continue to share, listen, and support each other, knowing that our experiences are indeed our superpower. The magical transformation that occurs when we share is the true testament to the power of human connection.

Pause & Reflect…

What personal experiences have shaped who you are today? If you were to share a part of your journey with the world, what would it be - and what impact do you hope it would have?
